Congratulations to Joy Grannis, our 2025 Featured Artist of the Year!
Nature and art are deeply connected—both invite us to slow down, observe, and appreciate the intricate details of the world around us. This featured artwork by Joy Grannis highlights the New England American-aster and the wavy lined emerald moth, two species that play an important role in our region’s ecosystems.
At Northern Woodlands, we celebrate the connection between art and conservation. By supporting artists like Joy, we highlight the beauty of our forests and inspire deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Artist Statement
I’m Joy Grannis, an illustrator and artist from Downeast Maine. Growing up on a homestead, I spent my childhood and teenage years immersed in the evergreen forests and wildflower meadows that surrounded me. This connection to nature fostered a deep respect for the environment and a passion for advocating for its protection. With a B.A. in environmental planning and policy from the University of Southern Maine and a graduate certificate in Scientific Illustration from California State University, I blend my scientific knowledge with my artistic vision to create works that celebrate the natural world and inspire conservation. I primarily work with watercolor, gouache, and digital media.
